As part of the settlement of the federal lawsuit against Orange County and numerous Orange County cities, the County of Orange has been split into 3 SPAs. The idea is for the cities in each SPA to work together on homeless issues and share resources.
Buena Park is a member of the North SPA. It has agreed to step up and provide a temporary shelter. This shelter will be located at 7101 Lincoln Avenue, Buena Park.
As part of the efforts, the City of Buena Park held a community information meeting on December 17 at Centralia Elementary School.
Buena Park Police Department was well-represented. They explained to the community that they cannot enforce the anti-camping ordinance in the city until there are adequate beds available for those living on the streets. Unfortunately, this is an essential element to fixing the problem of homelessness.
Citizens have complained about the homeless roaming the streets, parks and business parks. They want something done about it and have been frustrated by the lack of police involvement. This is a big reason for BPPD’s presence at the event. They want to explain to the public exactly what is going on.
There will be a discussion about this shelter idea at the next Buena Park City Council meeting on January 8, 2019 at 5 pm. Interested residents should plan to attend this meeting.
