The Buena Park News received an anonymous tip that Council Member Fred Smith has been interfering with the effort to recall Council Member Sunny Park. This tip says that Council Member Fred Smith interfered with a request for volunteers from the Orange County Republican Party and blocked a major donation to the recall committee.
Blocking Attempt to Get Volunteers
One of the aspects of the recall is they must collect 1800 signatures from voters registered within District 1. As part of the process, the Yes on Recall Sunny Park from Buena Park City Council 2019 committee requested volunteers from the Orange County Republican Party. An advocate from Stanton, David Shawver, forwarded the information to his representative in Buena Park requesting that he supply the committee with volunteers. This representative immediately forwarded the request to Fred Smith, who stopped the process in its tracks.
Our source tells us that Council Member Smith struck a deal with Council Member Park to help her defeat the recall initiative against her. This denial of volunteers was just one part of the scheme Council Member Smith put into play.
Our source tells us that Council Member Smith used political pressure to keep a donor from donating a large sum of money to the recall effort, a donation that would have enabled the committee to hire a professional canvassing team, virtually guaranteeing that Park would be recalled. In return for exerting this political pressure, Council Member Smith has struck a deal with Council Member Park that she will vote his way on any issues he requests her to vote on in the future.
Brown Act Violation
This is a violation of California’s Brown Act. City Council members are not allowed to discuss their votes in advance and most assuredly cannot form an alliance in which they will always vote in favor of each other’s issues.
Council Member Smith has violated the California Government Code via his actions to illicitly support Council Member Park. We are left to speculate as to why he would do such a thing.
Council Member Smith was contacted by The Buena Park News for comment. He did not return calls or emails regarding this matter. We are continuing to investigate this information.
